Turkey frier/ boiler

Post by aberdeenangus » Sun Dec 01, 2013 11:56 pm

Hi, I'm look at making the step up from kits to BIAB, but I'm looking at doing it as cheap as possible. I've had a look around and a Turkey boiler/fryer kit costs less than a propane burner and a stock pot. Has any one got experience of this type of equipment and if so am I just wasting my cash?
Many thanks

Definitely. That's what I started with, and it still works great. The pot mine came with is just big enough for a 5 gallon batch but you must be very watchful to avoid boil-overs.

I've since upgraded to a larger keggle as my boil kettle, which fits nicely on top of the same propane burner, and I still use the original turkey fryer pot as my "hot liquor tank" for sparge water. Go for it! You can continue to upgrade later: add a ball valve and hops strainer and thermowell to the kettle, etc.

My most recent brewday thread took place at a big National Teach A Friend to Brew Day event; click to see lots of these kinda systems in use.

I considered one of these myself, as seymour says, they tick a lot of boxes relatively cheaply. However, from your user name there's going to be one MAJOR drawback.... all the turkey fryer kits I came across when I looked into it were an import from the USA - lucky if you can find a seller who'll ship internationally, and when they do the postage is likely more than the cost of the setup itself !.... and then the duty man will want to take a duty-&-VAT sized chunk out of your ass before postie will hand it over to you.

In short, they arent really viable for UK brewers for individual import, as you can get a stainless "marmite" + burner for the same money or less.

Be patient and maybe put a wanted add in the for sale section of this forum - you'll get what you want eventually :)

Here's what I bought on ebay a few weeks ago

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/gas-burner-ri ... true&rt=nc

Swapped the pipe and cylinder from my roofing blow torch onto it and away it went - and each individual burner ring can take my 19l stainless full of 12 degree cold water to boiling in about 20 minutes so they have an output in the ~7.5 kw range - not bad for £5

Cool find, Pinto. I've seen similar "army surplus" type things on eBay too, but always too late. By the way, I'm not familiar with the term "stainless marmite", I assume it's just a reasonably priced stock pot of some kind? Do you have any pictures?

There are many pics about - marmite is the french word for stockpot or saucepan - its a reference to the common or garden stainless bergland stockpot

I am waiting delivery of one of these to get me off of the stove top.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004070QDA

I figured the steamer basket will be great for helping me lift the grain bag out of the kettle and as its around 47 Litres I will be able to do a full Boil

On Purchases supplied by Amazon all import charges are covered in advance so you know exactly where you stand at the point of purchase.

Its due for delivery before the 1st March , so hopefully I will be brewing with it this weekend

:D

Interesting :) with little modification, an AG brewer could use the steamer basket to contain the hops and break material too...

So how much did it cost you all in the?

Hi, I now have 5 batches under my belt with my 50qt turkey fryer.

Amazon are as good as their word and there was no Import or VAT, it was all paid up front, they even delivered two weeks earlier than they stated they would.

I paid in Euros as my Credit Card account in based in Spain.

Cost break down Item(s)

Items Ordered
1 of: King Kooker 5012 Portable Propane Outdoor Boiling and Steaming Cooker Package with 50-Quart Aluminum Pot and Steaming Basket
Sold by: Amazon Export Sales, Inc. Condition: New $99.-----Item(s) Subtotal: EUR 75,79 Shipping & Handling: EUR 36,98 ----Total before tax: EUR 135,32
Sales Tax: EUR 0,00 Import Fees Deposit EUR 22,55
-----
Total for This Shipment: EUR 135,32 Converted to Sterling that's approximately £111.00

I then had to change the Regulator, I went for a Propane one that cost me £19.00 (including postage) My overall expense £140 GBP.

On Ebay you can purchase a 47 litre Aluminium Stock Pot for around £66 (stainless ones are about the same), a gas burner £22.00 , + regluator, hose and jubilee clips aprox £30 Total £118.00

Based upon those sums I have paid £22 for the Basket. So its cost me about the same as if I had purchased all the kit in the UK minus the Basket.

Would I change it ? No , I am more than happy . Brew number 6 and 7 planned for this weekend

:flip:
