After almost 2 years of no brewing (apart from my usual batch of real cider - around 50 litres or so), I've started on beer again. The wife and I moved house about a year ago and we have a nice big utility room (or brewery as I am calling it)
where the brewing is taking place and my first brews back are Coopers Real Ale and Youngs Barley wine.
Coopers: So this is now finished after approx 3 weeks but has a strange scummy film on it, and there look to be a few suspended solids close to the top of the brew. What would this be? It looks and smells alright so am going to barrel as normal and see what happens - it reads 1004 which seems a bit too low for a beer.
Youngs: started at the same time as the Coopers, it still seems to be fermenting, in fact it has dropped from 1020 to 1016 in 3 days. Smells ans tastes OK though.
Any thoughts on either of these?
I have meticulously scrubbed and sterilised my gear as it has been in storage for all that time, so I'm sure the Coopers ca'nt be wonky because of lack of cleanliness....and why is the Youngs fermenting so slow.

Re: Returning Brewer
A picture might help but it sounds alright to me. Probably yeast still in suspension

Cheers and gone,
