the Toast Ale folks are going to pop their recipe on their website soon but cant seem to find any more info

Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
OK so I posted at the same time as I decided to have a go
mashed in with 4 kg marris otter and 4 loaves of various breads with some toasted and the rest as they came from Aldi

according to Beersmith the maris otter should give a OG of 1040 so be interesting to see what the 4 loaves add to this
now if anyone is reading this today which Hops out of
Fuggles
East kent goldings
Cascade
Citra

Cascade to bitter then fuggles and ekg for aroma
Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
It's probably too late in the day, but i'd go all English, EKG to bitter then more EKG and Fuggles late. Do let us know how much the bread contributed to the gravity of this, i'm really interested.

Bazz gone the other way because I had lots of Fuggles followed by late EKG and a few leftover Cascade
the Sparge was a mare very slow but not stuck (2 hours to get 30 litres )
so needs some husks adding to aid that .
just chilling now so will see if it added any gravity soon

Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
one of those brews when things go a bit wrong
nearly stuck sparge followed by running out of gas with half an hour still to go for the boil .
but ended up with 27 liters of 1056 gravity wort in the fermenter so the bread added quite a few gravity points
to the brew

I saw this being done on Jamie Oliver's programme. Really interesting idea. Would be nice to see this updated when the fermentation has finished and you finally get round to kegging or bottling it.
How old was the oldest bread that you put in the mash?

Yes will certainly update when its finished and ready to drink
the bread was bought on sunday from Aldi 1 seeded batch , 1 tiger loaf , 1 toaster white and 1 whole meal loaf
so no stale or out of date stuff
probably could have used one loaf less judging by the amount of wort I got and the runnings were still quite sweet when the boiler was full

See from I gathered was you need the bread to be dry but not mouldy (when I say dry I mean left out in the sun dry )

Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
Not just as easy as just bunging in the bread I found the bread crumbs filled the gaps in the grain and really slowed the sparge .Mishn Ales wrote:Saw this... http://www.brewuk.co.uk/blog/bread-beer/
would it work if the bread was in a BIAB muslin bag as long as it received the enzymes from the grain for starch conversion

Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
Update
Yes bread is pretty good in the beer ( IMHO )

Its made a very nice beer with no nasty tastes or unusual flavours
certainly worth using and more experiments needed but this first attempt is very drinkable even Mrs Trout likes it so thats a win for me .
Its what I would expect from the hops used , maybe a little on the bitter side but they will fade as the beer ages I guess , the wife says its like a lager and would be very nice on a hot summers day .

6.3% alcohol and yes 2 pints certainly have a kick so not a summer session ale this one

Re: Bread in the beer ( Toast Ale )
Having tried Toast's beer myself a few weeks ago, there was a definite slight salty tang at the end of the taste - are you getting any of that?
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
