I'm experimenting with tweaking kits to suit my taste.
Being a "scientist" I'm trying to only vary one thing at once.
My first attempt (which is in a keg awaiting tasting) is here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=82210
That had a starting OG around 1038.
I'm just starting another batch using the same extras but with Scammoden Dark rather Coopers Dark as the base.
The bucket is still a bit warm (which might affect the readings) but while I wait for it to cool a bit so I can pitch the yeast...
Should I be surprised that the starting OG of this batch seems to be around 1055?
That seems to be a rather large difference.
Starting OG.

Re: Starting OG.
Same volume of water and extract?
Is the extract thoroughly mixed in? Was the extract in the previous batch thoroughly mixed in?

I'm just here for the beer.

ss,
If it gets down to 1010, should be a nice 6.2% brew!

Hi StoutSreve,
Unless thinks have dramatically changed in the kit world, the Scammoden Dark is a 3kg kit that you've added 1kg of sugary stuff to, where as the Coopers kits are only 1.7kg, hence the significant increase in gravity!
Rock on.

Re: Starting OG.
That would explain it.
it did cross my mind that the Coopers only came in one can but the Scammoden was in two.
