Ditching floating dip tubes

Post by nallum » Sat Jun 21, 2025 3:10 pm

I decided to ditch floating dip tubes in my slimline Sankeys.

Two main reasons. First, they fail too often and just blow CO2 out of the keg, which is a royal PITA, especially when I have to pull the keezer away from the wall to open it in order to shake a keg to dislodge a floating dip tube off the keg wall or unhook it when it catches and rests above the beer level. Secondly, I don’t want my beer in contact with plastic, including silicone, for weeks to months.

But rather than go back to using the original spears and keg couplers, which are too clunky for my kegerator and keezer, I’ve decided to use stainless Cornelius dip tubes.

The problem is that the barbed liquid posts on the 2” tapping heads I use won’t accept a stainless Cornelius dip tube.

The solution is to bore out the threaded fitting using an 8mm drill bit.

Works great now. Zero chance of blowing CO2. I’d even say the flow is better.

To avoid your original problem of CO2 entering the beer line I used a simpler solution. I weighted the float with a stainless steel nut so that it remained just below the surface of the beer.
I will post a picture of it later today

I have wondered if they would work better without the filter like a floating racking arm?

Here are the piccies I promised. One out of liquid and one floating. The nut is 17mm spanner size 10mm thread size

Good tweak.
I have ordered one from uncle Bez. I will have a play.
Thank you.

That looks like a good idea. I’ll keep floating dip tubes for primary and secondary/conditioning. Then transfer bright beer to serving kegs with standard stainless dip tubes.

IPA’s look similar to mine: https://www.morebeer.com/products/float ... UYPMMyufjm
But I never had to add weights.

The liquid posts on my Sankey kegs are in the centre rather than to one side, as on a Cornelius jeg. And I’m using CaskWidge floats.

Good point, and I didn’t have good luck with cask widge in a corny.

Mine arrived with an enormous washer. Same idea, just not as good imo.

Nut added 👍
