thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge ....

Post by leewink » Sat Apr 17, 2010 5:19 pm

I, over the last week ordered and received this pump :-

http://shop.solarproject.co.uk/Solar-Pr ... s-c-2.html

20 odd quid, pumps 6 ltr a minute or 1 ltr every 10 seconds, is capable of temperatures to 120 degrees !!

I used it to recirc. the mash tun, just connected it to the front tap, and flowed it back on the bed through a tub with holes in it.

Does a cracking job, no noise, or fuss !!

Its 12v so twist the wires onto a 12v plug in adapter, job done, I have mine on a switchable volt one, and ran it today on 9v, lovely :)

I dont work for them b4 you ask !! LOL

Just though you'd like to know, I was looking at a proper sparge pump, but hey, jeez, the cost !!

So what I thought was if i ordered the cheaper but still marvellous pump, then i could offset the saving on a mini hanna magnetic stirrer to save some hard work with a spoon :) "Well thought that man", I know :)

cheers, lee

That looks good. Wish I had have seen it before spending £60+ on a Totton pump.

Lee, do you think it would be possible to attach a ball valve to it so that you can control the outflow? Would be interested in something like this for fly sparging.

Cheers

floyd theres no point, use a variable adapter, mine is swichable 3v, 6v, 7.5v, 9v, and 12v.

I ran mine on 9 today, even on 12 its only 1 ltr every 10 seconds, so the flow is spot on.

The pump i have is the one with screw fitting outlets, in the kit theres two screw on fittings and washers for tube, on the outlet i used syphon sized tube and one of the fittings, the inlet, i connected with a 12mm id tube barb connector off fleabay, and connected to the mash tuns tap.

Oh and yes, they are food grade too :)

.... also, bear in mind, they are not a great deal bigger than a windscreen washer pump, well, maybe double that, so bolting massive taps etc to it .... you get me im sure.

EDIT - you will have to cut a washer for these though, unless you have a range of them spare, i cut down a grolsch washer, job done :)

Get you. Check this out though:

http://shop.solarproject.co.uk/pump-con ... 0-p-9.html

When fly sparging, I like to sparge at around 400ml - 500ml per minute so would ideally have a tap fitted to the outlet.

Damn!! Missed a trick here, really kicking myself. Will recommend it to my mates though.

Lee, nice find, was looking for another pump. Is it the SP20/20 version you bought?

Hi Toby, yes I bought the 20/20 with the screw fittings, its great because its small and wherever you lay it, it just sits there happy if you get me, I use 3 fermentation buckets with lids on, stand my igloo maxcold 48 across 2 of them and the last one rests the pump on, job done :)

Looks like a nice find that leewink!
What kind of height will the be able to pump to? For instance, if I've got my underback sitting on the floor, can I use this to pump it up and into my boiler sitting on the kitchen worktop (say 1.2m up, plus another 0.6m boiler height)?

Off of the listing on the site "Centrifugal Impeller, creates 2 metre head of water", im sure theres a vid on there somewhere with the chap doing it, or search on youtube for the company name.

Ive lifted my tube towards this mark, and it pumps ok, you'll get a small flow reduction the further you rise it, but pumps none the less ! :)

Oh yes so it does! haha
cheers for the heads up, looks brilliant. Was completely shattered after my first AG mash juggling large volumes of hot wort around, think I'll be getting one of these :D

I found it a p.i.a too when jugging the mash tun instead of recirculating it, makes the job easier, and saves alot of time on a brewday.
