Another random ale

Post by Spud395 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:04 pm

I remember reading Brewdays before I started AG and thinking to myself 'these guys are disasters, I wont make feck ups like that'

I started by not pre-heating the mash tun in my panic and missing my temp's by a long shot.
This was quickly sorted out by a few kettles of boiling water, only thing is I had decided to go for a thicker mash in the hope of lowering the pH, we'll try again next time.
All went well untill 2 minutes from the end of the boil when the dang boiler decided to quit.
No worries I reckon 2 minutes isnt going to make a difference so I hook up the hose to the immersion chiller.
Well I guess it was all the frost but when I turned on the hose it was like a sprinkler system.
Fecking holes everywhere in it, quick patch up with insulating tape and got her all cooled down anyway.

Eventfull enough, but got a full FV in the fridge going like a steam train :D

Spud some dyas are born for disasters, don't mean the beer will be though.

Hey Spud. Is there any gunk on the elements of your boiler? This is one thing I am anal about, and make sure I clean them constantly, as the longer you leave it the harder it is to get off. This is the only thing that has caused mine to cut out. I look forward to tasting this ale at a future meet up hopefully. Any notions of coming down for the Franciscan Well Cask Festival next week?

Cheers,
Billy.

+1 on the boiler element gunk suggestion. Mine cut out mid boil a few brews ago, and i had to decant 26l very hot wort, scrub the element clean, and it all worked again. Lesson learned ;)
Fermenting: AG#22 San Diego IPA
Drinking: Probably.

You nailed it lads, both elements were mankey.
When I cleaned them up, they're grand.
Would love to make it down next weekend Billy but a whole conspiracy of events is keeping me away:(
Will bring a few bottles down to the next meet up for sure, on a bit of a brewing mission at the minute, to build up stocks so should have a bit of variety ;)

Bottled this evening, earlier than normal for me but it just suited to do it.
It had more or less fermented out in 2 days, and went to 1010.
With the high OG and the low FG it's comming in at 6.3%, oops this was ment to be a session bitter :)

This whole re-pitching yeast is un real, 3rd gen nottingham and I think it'll be going again.
Beer tasting very good on bottling, looking forward to this in a few weeks.

Having a taster of this now, using Floyds ( http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... 24&t=39661 ) syringe method.
Malt, malt and more malt, very good and can only imagine what it will be like in a months time, complex as feck!

Had a sample of this one this evening; got a nice caramel aroma (no surprise there!), with an initial toffee flavour (superb!), and surprisingly I got a coffee/roasty flavour too. Although when I looked at yer recipe, it was obvious that the Choc Malt brought that to the table.
