How long can beer be left in a corny

Post by Vossy1 » Thu Sep 14, 2006 2:10 pm

I haven't had a drink from my corny for about 2 weeks. I went to remove the empty corny next to it, lifted up the partially filled one and it was surprisingly light

I thought I might as well clean both so drew off (with no intention of drinking it) the last pint...

IT WAS BAD

Now bearing in mind that if I have 4 filled cornies, which will be in the next 7 days, I'm worried that the beer will spoil b4 I get to finish it

My cleaning/sanitising is quite thorough so 'm not sure how this happened.

Anybody :?:

So long as your sanitation procedures are up to scratch, beer in a corny can last for months. If the beer in the other full cornies have gone off too then you have a problem (other than having no beer). The last pint in a keg could just be manky due to yeast autolysis (the yeast cells rupture and spill unpleasant tasting stuff into the beer - this is why it's a good idea to make sure as little yeast as possible ends up in the dispensing keg)

What kind of bad?

I agree with Steve, the beer in the cornies will last a long time although I don't think you need to worry about autolysis. I have had a beer from a cornie taste very astringent only to find the tap needed cleaning.

You'd be amazed at the crap that builds up in those black flexitaps....

It could well have been the tap Tribs, it was semi jammed 8)

It was the medicinal taste you get when chlorine reacts with phenols in the beer when items aren't rinsed properley after sanitisation.

My sanitisation procedure for line (air and beer), tap, posts and disconnect.

Dis assemble everything, clean with VWP, rinse with water, and soak in a soln of iodophor for 10 mins. I clean the hub to the kegerator in-situ with a WVP soaked towel only.

I the re-assemble everything. Using an empty corny, I fill it with a strong soln of VWP, pressurise the keg and draw the sanitiser through the tap t'ill there are no more bubbles in the line. I leave in this state for 20 min, then draw all the remaiming WVP through to waste.

I then empty the corny, rinse with water, and refill with a soln of iodophor. I then repeat the drawing process but for 10 mins this time.

I clean the posts using a iodophor soaked rag, which sits on the posts getting the occaisional twist during the above process.

I attach the keg and draw off the 1st 1/2 pint to waste

Hi DaaB, I use oxy cleaner to clean the keg itself. I think I'm gonna invest in some soda crystals...don't like the idea of pitting.

Regards keg of Iodo....I have been thinking along these lines myself..a small 9ltr corny would be perfic for this purpose.

I don't think you really need to sanitise your lines and tap. You do need to clean them though.

I have now stopped sanitising them because I believe the build up of crap in my tap was due to iodophpor. I just disassemble the tap and disconnect and rinse them and the lines with hot water using a toothbrush to scrub away any gunk.

Just a question on Iodophor. I've only just started using it and I made some up in a 5 litre PET bottle. I've read that you can judge the effectiveness of it based on the colour - it becomes clear over time.

Well I noticed that after a few days in the PET bottle it had almost become clear like water therefore presumably was no longer any good (at least not to be relied upon).

Now based on your comments above, it sounds like I ought to be able to put some in a spare cornie and use that for a longish time. I wonder then if it is affected by UV light and it is the UV that causes it to degrade? Presumably if kept in a cornie, since this will not happen, it should last longer :?

EB - in my experience it is affected my exposure to sunlight. I keep any I've made up in a dark place and it lasts for about a week before losing colour.

Good point, hadn't thought of that as a factor.

Chlorine displaces iodine from soln.

To test this theory put some bleach on a dish and add a drop of iodene...it should go clear instantly 8)

That's why when I clean my corny lines I run VWP through 1st followwed by iodophor soln. As soon as the iodophor starts running out brownish I know I've got rid of the chlorine 8)

Light does degrade iodine in soln, thats why it's kept it brown bottles in labs.

EDIT

Here's a data sheet for iodophor and there's no mention of light !

It would appear iodophor is as vunerable to oxygen as our beer

Interesting. Before using my CFC the other day, I made up 5 litres of Iodophor solution and syphoned it twice through my CFC to sanitise it.

Now last time I used the CFC, I flushed it through with water. This time the Iodophor was pretty brown afterwards - I put it down to taking off the tarnish or something similar from the inside of the copper pipe; does this sound familiar to anyone?

Had the same effect this time I brewed but even before I had run it through the CFC it had gond a sort of purple colour (just from rinsing inside the plastic fermenter). Anyone else get this or does it stay a fairly thin transparent brownish colour for you :-k :-s
