I wouldn't based on the pressure build up they'll experience. Corked Champagne bottles would be fine 'cos they're thicker glass, and the cork principle can handle pressure, but that's a whole lot of work, compared to bottle conditioned beer bottles and a crown capper. Think of the fun you'll have emptying them first.

The problems with srew cap wine bottles are the glass is too thin to safely and reliably take the pressures of your carbonating beer, and the screw cap is probably not capable of maintaining the seal at these anticipated pressures - I would think.

SWMBO and I used a few screw top bottles for some wine once, putting corks in them. The glass is thinner and neck is wider. The corks did not have a very tight fit. On some of the screw top bottles after several months in the wine rack a drip had formed at the head of the bottle :(
In our experience the corks are easily removed from the screw top bottles because of the loose fit of the cork. I would suspect that the corks would very quickly pop out of the bottles if you put beer in them.

In summary we tried it and they were mostly ok. But since then we now try to use normal wine bottle that are designed to take a cork. We still have a few screw top ones as backup but are slowly getting rid of them.

I've always thought screw caps ought to be better than cork closures for wine (non-sparkling of course), after all there's no chance of a corked wine, but to be honest I've never experimented with them, I've always used cork closures the few times I've made wine. The biggest problem I see is the caps that are sealed with a waxed cardboard disc, I doubt they'll re-seal indefinitely. The caps with a rubberised coating on the lid would be more suitable I'd say.

Wine always scares me as I always think the corks might pop out and spill the whole bottle, which is why my last two strawberry wine bottles are standing upright in the fridge.
