Hillbilly house bitter brewday

Post by Horden Hillbilly » Sun Jan 06, 2008 12:31 pm

I am all done & dusted now, I had a 4:40am start (Am I mad?), all washed up & gear put away by 10:50am.

It went well, I was only slightly low on the effiency this time, I estimated 1044 @ 72% effiency, I finished up with 1042. After my last ag brew, Mrs H's pilsner, I am not complaining, although I may drop the effiency down to 70% on my next ag brew which does not use any sugar. Here is the link to the recipe.

Anyway, waffle over, here are the pics.

Checking the mash temp, I hit 67c. I prefer my mash temps on a bitter to be at the top end of the scale, I prefer a bitter with "mouthfeel".

Image

Hops at the ready, the tops off beer kits don't arf come in useful for the late/soak hops.

Setting the sparge system up.

First runnings of the wort.

Nice vigorous boil, time to add the first hops & switch one of the elements off.

First runnings of the cooled wort.

Yeast starter at the ready, the Brewlab standard yeast is lively stuff, I started this on Friday evening & it was fizzing away first thing Saturday morning!

Image

Aerating the wort, I have just added the yeast to give it a good mix at the same time.

I get for work at 5am, i am not getting up at that time on my day off.

To get a head start I boil the water in the HLT the previous night to get rid of the Chlorine. Then I use a timer plug, then set the thermostat and the timer plug to come on an hour before I intend to start. I got up and the mash was on 10 minutes later.

Great pics Dave, was it still dark when you finished?

that's about as early as I get up on a weekday,

there's nowt wrong with getting it done early and having the rest of the day free

The main reason that I do it nice & early is that as Garth knows, our kitchen is somewhat er, on the compact side. If you tried swinging the proverbial cat in there it would definetly have all the crockery flying!

I can have the boil almost complete by the time Mrs H get's up to start the sunday lunch, therefore we don't get in each others way!

Nince one.

If those Yorkshire puddings were going to be part of your Sunday meal then I don't blame you for clearing out early! They look great.

I asked for that one, didn't I! When you do your next brew Tax, I hope you are as considerate as me & wait until the breeze is blowing in my direction as I did for you, so I can get a whiff of your boiling wort!

We certainly know how to look after ourselves, a nice roast & gravy, roast potatoes + veg, washed down with home made red wine. There are no frozen yorkshires allowed in our home! 8)

Update.

This Brewlab yeast is certainly vigorous, if anyone uses it make sure that you place an old sheet of some kind under the fv, this brew has foamed over the side of the bucket! It is slowing down now though, I pitched the yeast on Sunday morning, by Sunday night there were slight signs of it kicking in & it was well away first thing Monday morning.

In case anyone is wondering, I always place a sheet under my brews, I was caught out a few years ago with a Whitelab Burton yeast which foamed over the top & made a mess! #-o

The yeast looks up for it

I've got a slant of that to try soon - let us know what you think of it.

Rightly so in my opinion too HH. I'm half Yorkshire so I'd probably get disowned if I bought them frozen
