Storing grains

Post by Chunk1234 » Thu Dec 03, 2009 5:28 pm

I store my hops (once open) in the freezer to try and keep them as fresh as possible. Anyone got any tips for storing grain? I bought some a black malt a little while back and it goes out of date at the end of this month. I can't see me getting a chance to use it before Jan, so I'm looking to store it and keep it as fresh as possible. Any tips?

Don't worry to much. Grain will keep fresh for several months if stored in a dry temperate place and wrapped up well. As for toasted grains like Black malt. I wouldn't sweat the use by date, I have used black malt that was four years out of date and found no great change in taste. You could store it in a plastic bin if you are worried about vermin or as added protection.

I store mine secured in bags and then inside a bin in my garage - ensure they are dry and in the dark - never had any issues.

Sweet, thanks for the comments. It hasn't even been opened (bought it for a brew that I haven't got round to doing yet). I figure it will mostly be used in small amounts for colour anayway, so if the flavour does fade a bit ... no big deal.
