dgg,g

Hello,
just saying cheers for now, just joined the forum, bit squiffy to be honest, enjoying the fruits of my labour! My name is Phil,I've dabbled in homebrew and a bit of wine making in the last 25 years or so.Have brewed from grain before but can't be donkeyed now.Lately rekindled my desire to brew from malt extract and home grown hops, supplemented by bought hops.Am currently drinking something i've thrown together from approx 3kg amber malt extract,200g chocalate malt, approx 80g Wye Challenger main boil followeed by approx a handful of Cascade whilst resting. My recepe isn't an exact science but I'm enjoying drinking it.So CHEERS and my question is(after looking at comments on this forum)Is "Is home brewing Science or is it Art?"(More questions of a practical nature to follw)
CHEERS,Philbo.

Both. Making alcohol is science, a clear finnished pint is a work of art. After all every one tells me I`m a piss artist :)

I'll drink to that.
Homebrewing isn't an exact science; it's an EXTRACT science (sorry, rubbish joke I know,we are on the extract page)
I do enjoy looking at and drinking the finished article like it was a a piece of art.And because my methods aren't always exact the finished article is often a surprise, sometimes a nice one. :o

In the same way that an unmade bed is art, my beer is art.

LOL :flip:

Oh that was good. Happy new years btw. Well my .02 is also both. I've never had a brewday where I strictly adhered to a recipe without a little improvisation / inspiration. But I do try to track things in my log well enough to be able to do it again.

This has always been a controversial question whenever it raises its head . . . I remember the near fisticuffs on the HBD a couple of years back :D

My personal take on it is that brewing is a craft and we are all artisans . . . some of us have more interest in the science of brewing than others, but we are all artists in one form or another
