I Have A Head!!!

Post by Ditch » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:11 am

:mrgreen: Un F*cking Believable ~ under the circumstances! I have a head on my Wherry!

Having ballsed up yet again in my basic process ~ see my Post about 'what temperature to add the Kit / malt extract tot the water' ~ I found myself pitching my only sachet of " Safale " yeast (activated) at 34c. That must've been around 21:00? I figured I'd killed it.

Around 03:00, absolutely desperate not to lose my second of two 'brews', I got the kit supplied - seemingly notoriously lousy? - yeast sachet supplied with the Wherry kit and started activating that. Sure enough, it took almost an hour to show Any sign of life. But it'd have to do.

That's why, at around 04:00, I cracked the lid on my fermentation bucket and was about to chuck the new yeast in. Then I'm like ' :shock: '. Because gone is the black, still, dying before my eyes five gallons of wasted effort. No! Instead I'm staring in at a smooth, thick and creamy looking head that could pass as an asian Guinness top! I swear I could have carved a slice out like a soufflé and shown ye a photo of it! I almost Wanted to take a photo! But I was too busy shoving that lid back down!

This time round, by the way, I used my straight tap water. Only I added a half camden tablet (My god! Opening that tub and taking the instinctive sniff nearly took My head off!) I had a taste of the wort, hour after making and before the yeast went in. Tasted like malty liquor. Reading was around " 1036/39 "? Something like that. At about 37c? I'm yet to even start trying to work out what that means. Just some beer will suit me :)

Sorry. I'm waffling and babbling. I'm just excited and elated! Hope to god I still am in about nine hours time! :?

{Mod's? Should this be moved to 'Brew Days'? I'm just not sure quite where this shit fits. Just had to let it out! :D}

reminds me of when i did my wherry about 2 mths ago-1st attempt at a kit,worse than having kids i said at the time.With hindsight i think i had stuck fermentation but in my naivety kegged it anyway, turned out sweet and barely alcoholic ,still drank it as it tasted good.Well done Ditch but watch out for stuck fermentation as wherry seems to be prone to this according to what i,ve read on Jims

reading back through my notes my wherry kicked off at 1040 so you seem about right-blind leading the blind an all :lol:

Cheers, lads.

Yeppers, I too have gained the impression here that, if a brew's going to stick? It'll likely be Wherry. I've never consciously read an explanation of the cause. When I opened the box though, I think I put my finger on the obvious straight away :roll:

What a difference, eh? With Coopers ye get all that pep talk and are encouraged to note everything down, including the sell by date and batch number of the yeast sachet. Wherry? It doesn't even say 'Yeast'.

Anyway, seeing that coming, I'd got my Safale standing by and, incidentally, she's right now damn near spitting the air lock out! Going like a train :D
