DIY Pasteuriser?

Post by JamesF » Mon Oct 12, 2015 6:08 pm

A bit off-topic perhaps, but I'm thinking it's actually quite similar to brewing kit in the use of temperature control and so on.

Yesterday the children and I picked a large wheelbarrow full (absolutely piled full until any more rolled out) of eating apples and pressed them for juice ending up with just over nine gallons. I decided that was probably a bit much for the freezer, so I used the boiler as a temporary pasteurisation bath. Unfortunately it would only take twenty-two pint bottles at a time, so progress was slow and I only finally finished at 11:30pm.

It got me thinking however that it ought to be possible to make a continuous pasteurisation system using a coil passing through a water bath at a fixed temperature. If the input of the coil were connected to the juice and bottling were done direct from the coil output that ought to make a fairly efficient system.

Has anyone done anything like that and care to share their thoughts?

James

The dairy industry use plate heat exchangers for pasteurisation, a similar concept to your coil...
