Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
I don't know if this is an original idea or not, but I came up with a way of monitoring the beer level in a cornie by using the beer line itself. Here's a rough diagram:
Basically, you loop the beer line to the bottom of the cornie and back up again on its way to the tap, then connect the gas line from the opposite direction via a valve. Usually this valve is off and you can pour the beer as normal. When you want to check the beer level, you simply open the valve, and the beer level in the beer line will equalise with the beer level in the cornie.
I tried it on my latest batch and it seems to work. Apologies for the crap photo, but at least you can see the beer level in the beer line.
Advantages are that it only takes a couple of extra John Guest fittings, and since many of us have a few feet of beer line coiled up in the beer fridge already it might as well be put to use. Disadvantages might include the fact that every time you check the beer level, you are returning a few ml of beer to the cornie, which could stir up the sediment and so on. And I suspect it might not work at low gas-pressure levels, since the friction in the beer line would prevent the beer from self-levelling accurately.
Anyway, apologies if everyone's doing this already, but I hadn't come across it before, and it seems easier than messing around with floating magnets and so on.

That's very clever! Never seen anything like that before
I saw a complex way to measure level - http://www.kegdata.com/ where they apparently use
the pressure difference between the gas/liquid parts, if i recall correctly

That I do like.. i have some SS balls i bought via ebay china intending to use them to weigh down dry hopping bags and was dissapointed to discover they were hollow and floated, but now im off to test them with a magnet
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate

Both the OP and the float ball are very good ideas

I like that idea a lot, very simple and easy to do, think I might have to nick that:)

What a good idea. Both in fact are good ideas. I like the magnet idea. Now to figure out how to encapsulate one small enough and pop it into a sankey keg. A small ball bearing should work for the outside as long as it wasn't stainless steel.
Re: Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
The outside magnet is now sorted. 5mm (5g) spherical Neodymium Magnets Nickel(Ni-Cu-Ni) - 0.667kg pull. Paint it red or other bright colour. Now to figure out the inside. So how about a test tube?
Something like this. Pop in another magnet, and chuck in when kegging. Just need to calibrate the true liquid level as the ball magnet may not be exactly the liquid level.

Re: Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
Done a bit more research and found a source of cheap spherical magnets. http://www.omomagnets.com/index.php Ordered 10 x 5mm and 8mm ones. I plan to use the 8mm size on the inside placed into a small screw cap test tube from ebay. Total cost about £10 and that will give me enough for ten kegs in use at once. I only have four, so each keg level indicator is £2.50 each.

Re: Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
If you find the magnets have too strong an attraction and hold the float above the liquid level check out the kinder egg toy capsules for floats with more volume to add mass to pull down

Hoping the 5mm ones should follow the level, but if not strong enough the 8mm one should be.

Just one thing Bob, don't you use the 20l slim line traditional kegs?, if so what about the strengthening lip halfway down?
With the OP idea it wouldn't matter.

Re: Simple Level Gauge for Cornies
I hadn't thought about the lip, but it should still be okay, due to the shape of the inside container. I'll find out in a few weeks when all the bits arrive, as they are coming from China My concern is that the magnetic pull will be too strong, and stop any movement, up or down. Getting that right will be the key to it. Once I have the inside container to the side with a strong magnet I will need to use one just strong enough to keep it in proximity rather than clamped together, so fingers crossed.

I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't work with the lip, your keg will always be half empty or half full (depending on your outlook in life)
