Correct storage of ingredients

Post by Duncndisorderly » Mon Apr 07, 2008 3:53 pm

Fairly straightforward question to those in the know from one in the dark

Im gathering all the ingredients to make my first none-kit beer and i was just wondering if i should be storing the ingredients in specific way.

At the moment ive just put everything in the cupboard in my disused bathroom and the temp in there is between 16 - 20 depending on the time of day.

in particular im curious about storing the hops, grain and yeast

Thanks in advance

I would say the best bet for hops / fresh ingrediants is a air tight container in the freezer. As for the likes of spray malt / malt extarct I don't think it matters to much as long as its a dark place

unless you have acess to vacuum packing equipment...

Hops in the freezer in an airtight container or their own packet taped tightly up

Yeast in the fridge

Grain in a dry warm place in a bag tied up with as much air squashed out as possible, grain is hydroscopic, it draws in water moisture if it's present.

I have a couple bags of that silica gel stuff lying around in my grain cupboard, my mate who keeps classic cars uses massive bags of the stuff when his cars are off the road, keeps the moisture down and stops the interior going mouldy. You get the little bags in new trainer/shoe boxes.
