negative pressure in secondary FV

Post by DeSelby » Sun Aug 03, 2008 10:13 pm

Hi all, hope someone can advise on this as i'm new to brewing (see entry in guest book). I have got a 23L brew of Brupaks Craftsman Kit German Pilsner on the go and in a secondary FV. Its been in the Primary for a week and I changed it over yesterday. I had a heatbelt on it keeping it at a steady 23C for the Primary but have removed this now and the temp is room temp (20C) however the airlock last night was showing positive pressure from the barrel but has switched to negative pressure now (ie the atmospheric pressure outside the vessel is greater than inside pushing the water in the airlock back up towards the vessel) I assume this is because fermentation has stopped but i would have expected it to equalise. sorry if this is a daft question but is this normal? i am aware that lager yeasts work at a lower temp than ale yeasts but there was no indication with the enclosed destructions as to what the ideal secondary and conditioning temps are. Any advise appreciated.

Thanks for the info Daab, have removed the brewbelt from the ale FV and lifted the lid a little on the Pilsner (for betteror worse) as it was close to sucking the contents of the airlock down into the vessel.
