Yet another corny cleaning Q sorry !

Post by Damfoose » Sun Sep 07, 2008 9:16 pm

I know their are loads of cornie cleaning Q's but none that cover how im planning on cleaning mine.

If i wash out with soda crystals and use CO2 to push that solution out of the corny rince and then throw in 2 pints of a VWP and hot water solution give a really good shake and slosh around blow out that solution and rince three times would that be good enough for a cornie seeing as thats generally what I do with my cheep plastic kegs ?

Then fill pretty much straight away.

I have taken to only using caustic these days as far as SS is concerned.

It seems to take care of any bugs without needing VWP or bleach.

The VWP or bleach can be used but keep contact time down to no more than 5 minutes as it pits SS if left too long.

I wouldn't rely on washing soda as a disinfectant/sanitiser . . . . get hold of some Videne Aqueous Antiseptic (10%) from a local pharmacist (4.50 ish for 500ml) use it at the rate of 1.25ml /L then you can do away with the VWP.

Caustic soda is, i think, effective at killing some things. To be honest, the very high pH would probably do for a lot of things.

But yes, i personally use caustic wash, rinse, then iodophor being blasted around.

Personally I use oxy cleaners to clean and videne solution to sanitise.
I use boiling water to rinse, purge with co2 then rack the beer.

Reason I asked is because I have no idophor or Videne, But will look into getting some very soon.

Been to a few chemists none of them stock it and only that last one was not bothered about me buying the Viadene the rest asked if the stuff was allowed to be sold to the public ! Local chemist is ordering some for me so I should have it tomorrow.

I ordered (and got) my Videne Antiseptic Solution at Boots, no questions asked.

Boots will sell it to you, no probs. It's not a restricted product, at the moment. This may change as the problems we have with home drug labs increase.

Don't bother stocking up in panic, I don't see it happening soon, and Videne does have a use-by date.

Oh the joys of being a pharmacist :) The hospital where I work use loads of videne in the theatres etc. Our store room has about 800 bottles at any one time :)
