Oakham JHB - which hops?

JHBis a favourite of mine.
I assume the malt is 100% pale, but have no idea what particular hop combination is used for this particular brand of citrus twang. Anyone know for sure?

Ah. Lazy of me. I just found this:
The choice of varieties was also influenced by the scarcity of Goldings and Fuggles at the time and the suggestion by Mr Paul Corr-Bett of Charles Faram and company that the American varieties of Mount hood and Willamette might be used instead. John chose to use yeast from the Home brewery as he felt it had good flavour producing characteristics.

I'm in a bit of a brewing hiatus so just plotting really.
I think I'd be tempted to order some sort of liquid yeast suitable for a low ABV Amercian Pale Ale, because that's pretty much what it is, Peterborough or not.
So, um... WLP001 California Ale Yeast perhaps, which seems to be popular for its simplicity and ability to show off aroma hops. Or maybe WLP008 which should produce a less bitter taste and is generally recommended for golden ales like this. WLP060 is a more lagery possibility, whereas 041 and 051 are often described as sweet and fruity which mightn't be ideal.
Dunno. I'm being a very lazy brewer, and 'summer' is my excuse.

Yeah the 001/1056/US56 strain is brilliant for ales that you want the hops to shine through. It's probably my most commonly used yeast.Willamette are a top hop as well.fivetide wrote:

Real Ale Almanac says low colour MO, challenger hops to bitter, mount hood for aroma. Nice beer, i also had a pint of JHB extra at a festival last year, essentially the same beer but brewed to a higher gravity. Was very nice.

I know this thread is a bit old now, but if you are still watching, have you brewed it yet fivetide? If so, is it any good?
I brewed it using the recipe from Real Ales For The Home Brewer. I had none of that lovely JHB hop aroma, probably not enough late hops. Used WLP001.
Just brewed Bishops Farewell also with WLP001. Loads of late cascade for aroma this time.

I have found the last 15 minute additions in MO a bit conservative, so I tend to tweak them upwards. The first time I used 30g of MT Hood, the second 35g and the time 36g. All three have an excellent rating in my brewing notes and at the time I was supping one of them at home I had some seafood at Osbornes in Leigh on Sea and washed it down with a pint of JHB from the pub across the road which tasted very similar.jubby wrote:I know this thread is a bit old now, but if you are still watching, have you brewed it yet fivetide? Would brew this again, but have no Challenger or Mt Hood, but masses of other hops to use up first. Try it again with the extra Mt Hood,it is an excellent beer.

Thanks for that Stonechat.
I had already amended my recipe to 25g at 15 min and 20g at boiler off, i have not tried it yet, but fully intend brewing it again soon.

Ah, no, sadly i haven't brewed this yet. I haven;t brewed all summer and I'm just shifting into gear.
Also, I have a lot of Bobek which needs using, so i think I'll fashion some sort of 'stunner' variant based upon Bobek as my first brew of the season. Haven't had a moment to mess around with recipe software yet, but will get on it soon, hopefully, or bastardise Olloson / my own Sunrise recipe.
