Normans Real Ale Recipes

Post by Stonechat » Mon Oct 20, 2008 8:47 am

I printed off Normans recipes as there are a lot I want to try out and prefer working from a hard copy when assembling ingredients and pencilling in notes on the results.

However about halfway through Norman for whatever reason changed the brewlength from 25 litres (great just what I want) to 5 gallons.

Assuming they are Imperial gallons is the conversion factor below correct?

To convert Imperial gallons to litres multiply by : 4.546 X 5 =22.73

To get from 22.73 litres to 25 litres divide 22.73 by 25.00 = 1.099

Say round it up a tad to give 1.1.

If I multiply the grain and hops quantities in Normans 5 gallon recipes by 1.1 will this do?

BTW Norman if you read this, thanks for all the work :D :D :D

It will do!
Try to get your head around the recipe and hop calculators though! Your hop Alpha Acids may differ from Norms, it may be worth tailoring the hops to suit the alpha acids in your hops. If you can't be arsed though it should still 'work' though multiplying it up by 1.1 as you say.

Thanks for the reply. Like to think of myself as more of a "Zen " brewer, but guided by a recipe framework rather than the thoughts of grasshopper  Might get myself in gear to use a recipe calculator one day, but as I have the time to do a brew every week and sometimes two I find it easy to tweak the grain or hops to get the end result I want.

Normans recipes look good. I plan to try his Ridley's IPA to start with :D :D :D

The Ridleys is very good. Only done it once but I`m going to brew it as a session beer over xmas. If you liked the real thing you will love this one. Also will brew the Ridleys Rumpus one day soon.
