Dave Lines extract error?

Post by wetdog » Tue Nov 18, 2008 8:37 am

I've been meaning to make Dave Lines' Old Peculier for a while so I got everything together and did it over the weekend. However I was shocked to discover the OG was 1.040. Daves recipe states it to be a 6% brew. Now I know that DL's recipes are mainly 20% shy of the mark but surley that doesn't apply to an extract brew. Even though there was a pound of grain added, this was not actually mashed, but rather added to the boil.
I even entered all the ingredients into beersmith and that showed an OG of 1.042.
The best I can really hope for now is 4% which is really not strong enough for my taste :(
in future I'll type any recipes into beersmith before proceeding...

In my copy of BBLTYB from 1982, the Old Peculier recipe is for 25 litres but the first ingredient is for 15 litres of "water for brown ale brewing".
Beersmith gives me an OG of 1.067 for 15 litres with a abv of 6.47%

sounds like the same as the copy I have but at the end it says to top up to the full volume which is 5 gallons. I expect the pre top up OG would be around what you said but it seems misleading to state 6% when you would need to add around 2 gallons to that to get the length

The 1995 edition as this as the old pec recipe (initial ingredients)

3 gal water
4lb dark malt extract
8oz roast barley
8oz crystal malt
2lb soft brown sugar
2oz fuggles

is this the same as in the earlier editions ?

those are the ingredients I used but I'm not sure what edition I have as I'm at work now, although I think that since Dave Line died in 1979 there wouldn't have been an update, just a re-print. does your edition state 5 gallons?

so where you say at the beginning;

"if you want 45 pts in 23L.."

does this refer to the OG or the number of points dropped after fermentation?
