Sediment building up too soon?
Sediment building up too soon?
I've just put a kit on within the last 90 minutes and have notice a huge amount of sediment lying on the bottom. Is it normal for a kit to deposit so much sediment in such little time?

Re: Sediment too soon?
What about some more info, what kit was it, how did you make it up, did you use spraymalt (could just been undissolved spray malt).
Re: Sediment too soon?
it is a Cathedral Lager kit (HBS own brand) and followed instructions exactly as I did with the last kit.
It is...
add contents and sugar to vessel
add 4 pints boiling water and stir until dissolved
make upto 5 gallon
at right temp, add yeast and mix

Re: Sediment too soon?
I dont imagine that its sediment. As the brew has only been going for a few hours then I would sanitise your mixing spoon and give it a damn good stir just to make sure its not sugar which has not dissolved properly. You wont do any harm to stir it now and it will give the wort some extra aeration which will help the yeast at this stage.

Re: Sediment too soon?
good stuff!
I've noticed that the majority of the yeast is at the bottom-end of the barrel and is sinking. I'll give it a stir anyway as nothing is happening and I'll try and grab some before and after pics too!

without wanting to sound like an idiot, what do you mean? Is it an excess of a certain ingredient?oblivious wrote:Could be break material?
I've noticed absoloutly nothing floating on the top at all.
Re: Sediment building up too soon?
there is a little bit of activity happening but nothing major. Would it be worth re-pitching?

Re: Sediment building up too soon?
It shouldnt be break material as its a kit brew.It looks like the yeast is just sat at the bottom not working. It could be worth repitching. What other yeast do you have to hand?

Re: Sediment building up too soon?
I only have a yeast from a Geordie Yorkshire bitter kit.
However when I retuned home from work tonight, the sediment has reduced and fermentation has started. I've checked the SG and it has dropped from an original 1.054 to 1.044 in 24hrs.
I suspect this to be ok?
