Liquid or Spray?

Post by badgerdan » Sun Nov 30, 2008 11:30 pm

Hello all.
I've only just started out making my own beer and have used Coopers kits which have turned out good so far, but I'm now wanting to move up to extract so I can make aNewcastle brown ale beer, a hobgoblin beer and a few other great beers from England I've grown to love :) (any first timer easy recipe pointers would be appreciated)

Anyway, my problem is I've noticed my local homebrew store here in Norway is actually quite rubbish and only sells Coopers kits, and a lot of 4/7 day wine kits and nothing else :( so I'm going to have to order online but liquid extract is quite heavy and the price of postage will be about the same as what it costs to buy bringing my homemade beer costing quite a bit.

So, can I use spray malt instead of liquid malt as it should be easier for postage costs than the large cans as I've heard that 1 kg of spray malt is the equivalent of 1.7kg's of liquid. Is this true? Munton's suggest their spray malt to be used as well as or instead of sugar in beer kits.

Thanks in advance

ok that's good to know but how much spraymalt do i need compaired to liquid?
Also, all the instructions I've read about extract brewing it always mentions liquid malt and boiling so do i just follow the same time lines but never bring it to the boil?

Yeah that's what I thought but you'd put in your other post that spaymalt doesn't require boiling :) think i know what you mean now though.

Thank you so much for your help, much appreciated. I'm going to go off and find a newcastle brown ale recie to do, here in Norway a 500ml bottle from the supermarket is around £4 and £6.80 from the pub, damn alcohol and import charges

If I made a lager using spray malt, how much would I need for 5 gallons @ 5% alc, or how much spray malt and sugar??

If I need to use extract to boost the OG of a strong beer I'd always use dried extract - it's a more stable product.

Yes, but where can I buy it in bulk? At H&G I can get bulk Brupaks LME and their shipping rates to Ireland aren't bad.

Around 3Kg - I've used the extra light fairly well in a lager . . . as reported in Brewers Contact ;)

Never knew about Brewers Contact, I've asked them to send me a membership pack. :D

Fair enough but if you do a lot of extract brewing its £5 (DME) vs. £3.50 (LME) per kg. Never worried about shipping because H&G ships up to 30kg for a fixed rate.
