Crushed or whole?
If a recipe doesn't say, then which do i go for? Also what bags are best for steeping in, reusable or single use?

Crushed. Only get whole if you have a mill and are planning to keep the grain for awhile.

They'll need to be crushed to extract anything. If you've got whole grains you can crush them in a sandwich bag with a rolling pin. Otherwise buy them crushed.
Muslin bags are good for steeping - they can be reused a few times if you wash them out

Excellent, thanks for your help guys
Has anyone tried Coopers kits and have you got any good newky brown ale recipes? I'm drinking a draught now and it's ok, definately good enough to drink from not much energy but it's not something I'm going to do that often, they all seem to have the same taste but as the beer gets darker the more you taste 'that' taste; anyone else know what I mean?
