priming 19 litres

Post by sam c » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:19 am

i am going to reduce my brew from 22 to 19 litres to up the strength a little. i was advised on this site to add 85g of white sugar to a brew for priming. is this the same if im makiming 19 litres or should i use something more like 70g? im brewing HB larger supreme.im also planning on using glass bottles so would rather they didnt explode.

You should reduce the priming sugar to avoid over carbonation, although I seriously doubt genuine beer bottles would explode with the extra pressure.

If you work on 5ml (half teaspoon) per pint you can quickly work out what you need.

23 litres down to 19 would equate to about 66grams, so 70 sounds good :)

half a teapsoon is only 2.5ml, you'll end up with double what you need if you go with 5ml per pint, an that could make for some 'interesting' glass bombs....

You didnt actually say how you was priming, some ppl add sugar to the bottle and some add it to the FV.

I personally add sugar solution to the FV and I usually go for 8g of sugar per ltr. Thats what ive been using for my lager kits anyway and so far out of 110 bottles made ive never had one glass bomb.

I spose it all depends how much fizz you want.

I prime first by disolving the sugar in some boiling water and adding it to the bottom of a bottling bucket (sterile), also add finings at this time, then using pipe (sterile) transfer the beer from the FV to the bucket. The swirling motion of the beer mixes the sugar and finings nicely.

Once the beer is in the bucket, I add a bottling stick (Sterile) to the tap and away we go !

well about 8g per ltr should see you right then. As I said its all about how fizzy you want it. but 5g-8g works well.
