After some very successful, but relatively expensive extract brews, I thought I'd have a go for a kit for the simplicity of it all. So against all advice I bought a Muntons two can IPA kit. I bet you can't guess what I'm going to say now?
Yep, stuck at 1020.
Rather than adding enzymes and potentially spoiling the taste in the quest of a half decent FG I kegged it. After a couple of days of warm carbonation and a few days cooling I had a taste today.
It's not bad for a beer that's not hit the 4% margin, but I'll stick to the extract (and the AG stuff with my brother in law!)
If I ever venture down the kit route again, is there a reliable one that will hit 1008-1010? Anything bitter/ale/wheat will be attempted if I can get guaranteed decent final gravity and a decent taste!

I like stout .....

Re: Muntons - guess what?!
None of my four Muntons went below 1012 but they were all fine. I've had better luck with Wherry (1010 with a rouse and yeast vit and still £14.99 from Wilko's), though others had those finish much higher. For reliability? Edme superbrew gold with geordie beer enhancer, expect 1010 or under without any fuss.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget
Re: Muntons - guess what?!
the coopers kit i did dropped nicely to about 1010 if i remember correctly, and the john bull lager kit i did also dropped to about the same.
I tried muntons 2 can kit an got about 4% Im impressed with the taste though, the 1 can kits i did had a cidery watery taste but thats cos i used maize sugar rather than spraymalt.

Re: Muntons - guess what?!
That poses the question then, if you add some more fermentables would that increase the alcohol? I assumed that the low alcohol was due to low fermentables in the brew.
Re: Muntons - guess what?!
Yes it seems so strange to me that they risk possible repeat business by leaving successful fermentations to chance. IMO a 11g Sachet would be a safer bet and in real terms probably not cost the manufacturer that much more either!!Chris-x1 wrote:.... Adding more sugar or spray malt requires additional yeast as the yeast supplied is stretched as it is with most kits.
