Apple, Pomegranate & Blueberry

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sat Dec 27, 2008 2:21 pm

Bubble Airlock from demijohn, brewing 3L apple Juice with 1L Pomegranate & Blueberry... its been making a mess!

So do you think this is normal, and what am I making Wine or Cider? :? :D

btw, do you prefer these bubblers or the old S-bend style? So far I've found the low-profile style as in my picture to be a bit rubbish, I'll probably replace them with the S-bends sometime.

A Turbo Hybrid Cider Wine
Or THCW I guess

To bubble over is very normal, especially with these turbo...things.

I personally prefer s-bend airlocks, but that said i havnt used the other style, but by the looks of them, i think i just prefer S bends.

OK, its settled down now but is fizzing like a, erm!?, fizzy thing!
How long from start to finish does this THCW take to brew? I'd added about 500g of Sugar to the mix and used Youngs Wine yeast (with other Ingredients straight from the 'LIDL wine' thread.

cheers

What was the gravity?
My Turbo-thing is still bubbling (albeit slowly) after 3 feckin weeks! But then again the gravity was well off the chart.

I imagine it'll be all done in 7-10 days, but it depends how far its got to drop

I didn't take a OG reading, figured I'd just wait til it stops bubbling :)

What effect does it have if still fermenting?
I have visions of turning purple and blowing up like Violet from willy wonka.

Thats only if you drink quite a bit though, if not, the SWMBO may just not want to sleep in the same bed.

What you need is a bigger fermenter!

I prefer bubblers shoved into rubber bungs. The parts are bung, water container, inner tube and lid. I've been using them 18 years. I've tried the S-bend things 2 or 3 times and find them useless and hard to sanitize whenever they get messed up like that. Regular bubblers that come apart completely are never any problem to sanitize.

Here's what my bubblers look like:

i see your point on the cleaning side of things. Thats a nice big FV, I bought a few of the plastic Demijohns but they just don't look and handle as good as the old glass ones :)

Yes, it's he biggest I have, about 25 litres I think. It was given to me in 1991 just after I started homebrewing by a manager of mine. His father had been a homebrewer and passed on. I think my manager was grateful for a few bottles of my early homebrew.

You can't get this size anymore. I'd love to have another. It's the one I use as a primary fermenter.

I have many 22.8-litre, 19-litre and even a couple of 11.5-litre DJs. I'd trade 2 or 3 of the 19-litre DJs for one 25-litre DJ... but no-one around here wants to do that. (They want the big ones too!)

I've just racked this off into two 2 liter coke bottles and its pretty murky, even after a few days with bentonite and some time cooling off in the fridge. Tastes pretty bitter too, will need sweetener or something!

Patience, patience. You will be rewarded for patience. Yeast demands it.
