Isinglass
Isinglass
Does anyone who uses this have any tips or advice to pass on?
I have a bottle of the H&G liquid isinglass which I plan to use tomorrow when kegging. Current plan is to add the stuff directly into the keg after priming, then carefully stirring in.
One thing I was a bit wary of is it working too well and drawing too much yeast from suspension, therefore hampering secondary fermentation? Is this a concern?
I know dosage is important, as is a low temp, but any pointers from peoples' experience?
Cheers

Re: Isinglass
The H&G stuff is triple strength so you should add it diluted by a third. I use about half a pint of diluted isinglass in 5 gallons. It's extremely effective.
I don't prime my kegged beers so I can't comment on it's use in that situation.

Re: Isinglass
I thought it was meant to be added and allowed to clear the beer and then transfer to keg to carbonate? Yes it is possible to allow a beer to clear too much so there is not enough yeast for sec ferm. I have done it through time offshore while a beer sat. It was clear as a bell when i got back to it but would not carbonate. In saying that i have never used a clearing device other than time, temp and minimal disturbance of the trub layer during transfer so i wouldn't pay too much attention to my prattlings.

Re: Isinglass
Thanks both.
I'll go for 10 teaspoons mixed into half a pint of water (5gallon brew) and add...and see what happens.

Re: Isinglass
Did you see any results after using this? I need to cleat my Tim Taylor landlord thats in secondary and have ordered some Isinglass to try.
Re: Isinglass
I only added it yesterday when I kegged so I doubt it's done too much yet. I'll let you know how it goes after it's had a chance to do it's thing.
Re: Isinglass
I use it in the keg. My beer is chilled down after primary so most of the yeast drops out anyway. I then rack to keg, add finings and carbonate with CO2.pantsmachine wrote:I thought it was meant to be added and allowed to clear the beer and then transfer to keg to carbonate

It should be done pretty much done by now...if you added enough.Sando wrote:I only added it yesterday when I kegged so I doubt it's done too much yet. I'll let you know how it goes after it's had a chance to do it's thing.
