Grapefruity APA

Post by yashicamat » Wed Jan 28, 2009 11:54 pm

Planning to brew this on Saturday - how does it look?

25 litre length in boiler

3762g low-colour MO (95%)
198g wheat malt (5%)

15g Chinook 12.1% AA(I think) pellets 60 mins, 18 IBUs
30g Chinook 12.1% AA(I think) pellets 15 mins, 18 IBUs
30g Cascade 5.4% whole hops 15 mins, 9 IBUs

Total IBUs: 45
Est. OG: 1045
Est. FG: 1010
Est. Alcohol by volume: 4.4%

Yeast: US-05

I'm hoping to get a really grapefruity flavour in this beer with a nice twang from the fairly high bitterness level. Thoughts?

Cheers. :)

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now

You might want to increase the amount of late hops and perhaps do a steep?

I have never used Chinook or Cascade but find that Styrian Goldings in excess turns your brew into Grapefruit Beer-( Yuck )

I think Bigfoot barely wine uses Chinook for late additions

I am likely to be putting this into a corny so I am slightly hesitant about doing a steep due to the issues associated with force carbonation. However, it is looking increasingly likely that the pressure in my cornies will be barely what is required to dispense the beer, rather than carbonate, so it might not prove to be a problem.
