to crush or not to crush??

hi all, this may not be the correct place for this question but please forgive me.

i have done a small sample extract brew with somewhat unknown result ( leaveing it full time to condition which is killing me) but with the left over grains and hops thought of buying a cheap kit and adding to it.

the question is this would i need to crush my chocolate malt befroe steeping it for half hour or so the boil hops in this liquid or can i leave the grain whole??

not sure what recipe to do so was just going to wing it, by adding 200g of choc malt to geordie bitter kit and then some goldings along the way. any thoughts??
