Brewer's Choice ESB - OG 1.073 !??

Post by Jerry Cornelius » Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:07 pm

Something seems to have gone seriously amiss with this kit! I brewed it up as per the instructions. Added the big supplied bag of spray malt and 1kg of Medium spray malt (instructions said pale, but I wanted it a bit darker). The OG should be in the range 1048 - 1050. It's reading 1078! My hydrometer reads .003 over, and the temperature is 24 C. If I adjust for the temperature and my hydrometer, it's still1073 - I think, not too sure how to adjust for temperature  .

What on earth's going on :? ?

You can use these tools to correct for temperature etc.: http://www.collectionsoft.com/mybrewcol ... tools.html
I haven't paid much attention to the OG when using Brewer's Choice kits to be honest but could the stated OG be simply for the kit itself and not inclusive of the additional LME/DME/Sugar?

Thanks for the link Invicta - very useful.

It definitely says the OG is including the extra spray malt. I wonder if it could be because I stirred it up so well? It had a really good foamy head about 2 - 3 in high. But, I gave the hydrometer a good spin, and I couldn't see any bubbles on it... Hmmm. I dunno, I'll have to see how things progress. It's got a really good head on it now, just had a look. :)

Not a lot of help, but I'm on my second Brewer's Choice. To keep price down, I have 'experimented' with ½ kg spray malt, ½ kg brewing sugar. I never 'measure' my water when mixing up the wort - I aim for just above the 22L mark on the side of the FV - both my kits started at 1044.

I don't believe the original hydrometer reading, but the annoying thing is, that I don't know what it really was! I just a had a check this evening and it's currently reading 1.026 - a much more sensible figure!

 Am I missing something here? It sounds like ye all but working with a malt saturate solution there ~ then wondering why the Hydie's bouncing off the stuff?

Hell! This sounds like a 'Fun' brew! Sort of thing I used to create with LME. Just how much did the " Big supplied bag " hold?!

Dunno exactly Ditch, I think it was 2Kg. It doesn't say on the packet what the weight was. But it was a bl**dy big bag! Anyway I have high hopes of this kit
