Recipe Ideas Please - First Extract Brew

Post by brewin_bear » Sat Apr 04, 2009 3:50 pm

Well am about to take the plunge into extract brewwing. Have just made and tested my home made boiler (two Tesco Value Kettle elements in a Young's FV).

Have already got the following ingredients (building up the store cupboard see :wink: );

4Kg Light Dry Malt Extract
Crystal Malt
Fuggles
Cascade
Challenger
Goldings

Can anyone recommend a recipe using some of the above? Was thinking of a speckled hen type maybe.

Personally, I'd keep it simple early doors. How much Crystal do you have? I might use the DME plus crystal (depends on what you have, but say, 250g?), Challenger for bittering (something like 30g for 60 min boil), then Goldings for flavour and arome. How much of each hop do you have?

500g of Crystal. 100g of each hop.

OK, I've been playing with Beer Tools and how about this;

3000g Dry Light Malt Extract
250g Crystal malt (steep)
50g Challenger Hops (60 mins)
10g Goldings Hops (20 mins)
10g Fuggles (15 mins)

Should give 51.4 Bitternes and 5.1% ABV

Reckon would be nice?

It's the sort of thing I'd do. What's the volume of the brew?

Agreed. the only suggestion I'd make is to use one hop or the other for flavour/aroma. Next time do the same recipe, but reverse the hops. So, if you use goldings this time, use fuggles next. That way you can get an idea of the taste difference between them. BTW, you haven't mentioned yeast. Which one do you intend to use?

Good idea on keeping the hops simple. I'm going to be using Safale 04.

Good choice of yeast at this stage; it's what I use. Always reliable, attenuates well, and really good flocculation. I reckon you're good to go! :)

Looks great. I would also dry hop some fuggles when you rack it. Did this recently and the results were =D>

Let us know how it tastes in a load of weeks time!

Don't worry, I can't mash either yet... but I will! And I'm sure you will as well. It's a disease; now I've started down the brewing and recipe design road (in however simple a form) I won't be satisfied until I'm AG. Hopefully towards the end of this year. We'll see.
