Looks fine by me. I do like Challenger! One question; how have you calculated your IBUs? Using Hop & Grains calculators I get total IBU's from the hop schedule you have provide of 47.74 which sounds like far too much for your recipe and more than you've calculated.

Beersmith for all calculations. The OG came out slightly higher than estimated at 1.050... near enough though.

It's actually very similar to the orginal Stiff Squirrel below so reckon should be OK;

Just out of interest I've just tried that Hop and grain calculator on all of my recipes and every time it gives much much higher IBU than BrewSmith (or Promash which I also tried as a comparisson as well)or the original recipes :? I wouldn't trust Hop and Grain, but if someone want's to enlighten....

Be careful when working out hop bitterness, as there's the paper based calculation, that assumes every gram of your hops, is converted into bitterness & there's the actual rating, which takes into account the 'losses' when hops are added to a 'sugar' bases solution of a specific garvity, which is known as the hop utilisation. The Works of Glenn Tinseth cover this topic in great detail but in a nut shell, the greater the gravity, the lower the hop utilisation, therefore, the lower the bitterness levels will be.

eg
A gravity of 1.030, with a boil length of 60 mins will give a utilisation of 0.276
In contrast
A gravity of 1.120, with the same boil length of 60 mins will give a much lower utilisation of 0.123, effectivley half.

Now my understanding, is that BeerSmith, takes the gravity (& boil length) into account, when working out the actual IBU, as opposes to H&G which give the theoretical IBU, which is all they can give, without going into the complexities of base gravity, verses boil times etc.

Good stuff this brewing lark & very addictive :lol:
Fermenting - Nothing
Conditioning - Nothing
Drinking - Tea
Planning - Everything, if only I had the time ... !!
