I have just attempted my first grain brew, very exciting! Is there a rule of thumb as to how much to water to use for the mash. Have heard use 2.5 parts of water to one part of grain, ie; 2.5 litres per 1kg grain. Is this correct?

Yep, that's what most of us use.
Just got my Exe Valley Dob's Best Bitter clone on the mash as I type.
