Grain Mash IPA

Post by Bamboo » Wed May 06, 2009 7:20 pm

I'm fairly new to brewing beer, my first brew was from a kit, a yorkshire bitter that I dry hopped, which has turned out very well.
My second brew was an all grain IPA, the whole process went well, my wort had an OG of 1060 and ended fermenting at 1012.
I dry hopped with Cascade hops for a week and have transferred it to a cask just under a week ago.

My question is this, the beer tastes strong and has little traces of hops that I can tell over the strong taste of the beer, I'm planning of
leaving it to mature for about a month but I'm wondering how the beer will change over this period, will the taste change and the hops
come through more?

All help gratefully received,

Bamboo

Hi, Bamboo. Welcome to the forum.

To be honest, bitterness and hoppiness is usually apparent from the start, it's not something that develops with ageing -- at least, not in my experience.

What was your hopping schedule?

I hopped on the boil, at 30 mins, 15 mins and dry hopped for 1 week after primary fermentation?

Well that's more or less how I hop my ipa's too.

On the boil, 15 mins & 5 mins from end.

My best guess is that you did not put enough in.

Sorry to be flippant here, but I've just conducted another scientific taste test and it actually tastes pretty good.

It is strong, at 6.7% (OG 1060, FG 1010).

It taste bitter, so I guess the boil hops did their job, the aroma isn't too strong, I think next time I'll add some weight to
my dry hop bag,

All in all pretty pleased with my first all grain mash,

Best regards
