Okay update again, i seem to be going backwards and forwards here.

We've finally agreed upon:
Mashing bin/boiler from brewgenie, £65.
Big ol' stockpot on the stove for sparging purposes.

Mash the grains in a muslin bag in the mashing bin, leave the wort in there, over to the stockpot, batch sparge in there, lump that back in with the wort, boil up. Finally. Got there. Now to find a recipe whilst he orders things.

I've no doubt that using bottled calor gas is more expensive and anyone boiling outdoors will be wasting lots of heat energy but I'm pretty sure my energy costs have decreased since I switched to a big pot on the gas cooker.
I'll recheck the sums but the massive wok ring on my cooker took about the same time to get 18 litres of wort to boiling from sparge temp as it does to get 30 litres of wort in my electric boiler (with one element only!). To keep a rolling boil I found I needed to have the gas on quite high, I wonder if it would even boil 30 litres properly? I forget what the unit cost of gas is but I find it hard to believe that it's cheaper than the 85p or something I worked out it costing to run the electric boiler and HLT on a brewday.

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now

It's not easy to calculate. The theoretical max output of my 4 gas rings is about 7 kW. I use them all on full to get the boil going (and it is defo faster than my 1 element boiler) but once the boil is going I turn all the rings to minimum. At this point I have no idea what the equivalent kW output is. I know that the energy transfer is less efficient than an immersed electric element (because some heat convects up the outside) but I also know that gas is still lots cheaper than electricity per kWh, despite the highly publicised price hike. Not sure there will be much in it.

BTW, your wok ring is probably about 3 to 3.5 kW

(soz, Benson. I'll try to leave your thread alone now :) )

Cor blimey!
Well, after what is it, four months? Of waiting, I'm finally ordering my H&G 10 gallon brewery. 8)
They don't have any in stock right now, so I've ordered the "long legged" IC wort chiller and a couple of preliminary's.
I have to wait til about mid may til i can order the brewery. So not long to go now.
My mate has also bought me the BYORA book.

Nice one Benson - this has been a long and interesting road....

Good call on the long legged IC with the 10G brewery. I wish they'd offered that (or i'd known about it) when I ordered mine.

I spotted the long legged version a couple weeks ago and thought "Cor! Have to get that if i do or else i'll have to bodge something" so I'm glad i got it, just wish they'd hurry up now and get the brewery in so i can do my beers!

Borodave: I think i'm going to go for Old Speckled Hen (I heard theres one in the Graham Wheeler Book, failing that i know theres one on this website somewhere!) then perhaps Banks Bitter from the book. :D
