Which variety of Spraymalt?
Which variety of Spraymalt?
I am about to do my first extract brew using one of the recipes from Graham Wheeler's book, 'Brew Your Own British Real Ale'. All of the extract recipes call for pale coloured malt extract and as I intend to use Munton's Spraymalt I was wondering what variety this equates to. In Graham's book he says that pale malt has a colour of 5 EBC, the nearest spraymalt, colour wise, is the extra light which has a colour of <7 EBC. Does this sound right?
Re: Which variety of Spraymalt?
Thanks Chris,
So as I intend to use Muntons Spraymalt and they don't do a Pale version am I correct in thinking that I should use Extra Light Spraymalt as it's colour of <7 EBC is the closest to the 5 EBC that Graham says is the colour of pale malt?
Muntons web site states:
Extra Light <7 EBC
Light 7-12 EBC
Medium 24-44 EBC
Dark 44-70 EBC

Read page 11 of the GW book. It suggests Extra Light DME is used so you should be ok with that.

Extra Light will give you the closest colour match to pale malt assuming that a close colour match is important to you (I tend to be more concerned with how the tastes
).

Best wishes

PureGuiness, I've just re-read page 11 and you're right there it is in black and white, 'extra-light dried malt extract'. Thanks
