transferring from keg to bottles

Post by drmick » Tue May 19, 2009 11:18 pm

I remember reading a post a month or so ago about transferring from a keg into bottles. I have a Summer Lightning clone which is in a keg and would like to move some into bottles. The beer is carbonated, question is what is the best method for doing this. If I remember rightly the previous post said to attach a piece of tubing to the tap and run it into the sterilised bottles - I guess I release the pressure first (and then re-gas it afterwards) but being carbonated does the beer not froth up or is this not an issue - if it does froth up are there any hints and tips to avoid it

Thanks

You could use a counter pressure filler or beer gun.

for low quantities, I have had some success just running from a pressurised corni to the sterilised bottle via a bit of beer line tubing, chill the beer and the bottles first to keep the co2 in suspension otherwise your beer will be flat.

Once bottled, will the beer retain its fizz .................do you leave any air gap in the bottle? Does it need to be recarbonated in some way?

If the beer (as cool as you can get it) and bottles are chilled (bottles from the freezer) the co2 will remain in suspension and a low amount of foaming (co2 coming out of suspension) will occur, if you fill the bottle leaving a gap of about half an inch, any foam will fill the gap and ensure that there is no air in the neck when you cap it. You shouldn't notice any real reduction in the amount of fizz.

I haven't used a keg for some years. I often wanted to take a few bottles out with me..........jogging, down to the gym, that type of thing :? . Never really knew what to do. It seems as "simple" as super chill it and exclude the air. I will be having a go at that..........could be back to kegs again!

I found that the whole rigmarole of sterilising 40 bottles was too much like work and so I keg almost exclusively, however when I want a couple of bottles for whatever reason, this seems to work. Good Luck.

Following some guides posted by Chris-x1 I have bottled from a Cornelius Keg with some success. I run the keg from a flash chiller into very cold bottles and as sdcspeak suggested leave a foam gap from the top to about where you'd like the beer to be in the bottle. Capped and stored and even after a few months there has been no loss of carbonation and no oxidising using that method. Handy for passing your homebrew around to people scared out of their wits by bottle conditioning...muppets.
Planning - Not for a long while
