Extract recipe from bits and bobs

Post by verno » Wed May 20, 2009 11:27 am

Hi All,

I normally make kits but have been adding bits and pieces to my kits to enhance them. Having made up a recent kit I have about 750g of coopers light malt extract (liquid) left and this got me thinking whether I could make up 20 or so pints of an extract brew which would be my first extract. Below is a list of what I have, any ideas or suggestions?

750g light malt extract liquid
750g Pilsner malt
30g Saaz hops
25g Hallertauer hops
25g Gelding hops
750g flaked rice
750g chocolate malt (possibly wouldn't need that)

I don't have any yeast so would probably need ideas on that or would use a safdale strain.

Recipes / ideas gratefully received.

Thanks
Verno

I'm not sure you can Steep Pilsner Malt or Flaked Maise for an extract brew...

I've been brewing small batches of about 12 litres which just use 1 can of LME, so i think you might be a little short of fermentables for a 20 Pint brew.

ok, so how many pints could I make and what do you think I would need to do it? ie how would I use the malt?

Someone else might be able to answer your Pilsner Malt Question (Maybe a mini-Mash - http://www.brew.aledrinkers.co.uk ) Think he's busy changing his website though.
You could probably make about 10 Pints with the 750g of LME.

ok, so having now worked out that I can't seep pilsner malt (schoolboy error #-o ) I found a way of mini mashing. I reckon the following ratios:

1kg of pilsner assuming 30ppg would give enough sugar for about 1 gallon
500g flaked rice at 30ppg would give about 0.5 gallon

How much would 750g of light malt extract give if I combined them all? Would I then need to add brewing sugar?

A confused Verno... :?

Think I might have answered this, a pound of LME gives 37ppg in 1 gallon.

So it sounds to me that using 1kg pilsner, 500g flaked rice and 750g LME I could make about 2.5 gallons? - is this right or does that assume super efficiency?

That'd produce a brew of about 4.5% ABV.

You can't use crystal malt on its own. It's basically a flavouring (although it does contain some sugars).

You could mini-mash the malt, add the malt extract and dilute down to 10 litres for a 4/5% ABV brew.
Best wishes

I edited my post, it should have read flaked rice. Either way, that sounds like a plan to me, 10 litres would be a good taster and probably all my current collection of pots could handle
