Have I got this right?

Post by DC » Mon May 18, 2009 8:20 pm

Hi all, I am about to pop my AG cheery this weekend  and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if I have got the process correct? I am going to be brewing the Barley Bottom Gob Hoblin receipe (see below). Hoping to start my brewday early on Sunday morning. I am just wanting to check that I have the process right in my head before starting my 1st AG brew  I know these questions have probably been asked a hundred times but what the hell I am going to ask anyway [-o<

So here goes with what I think I should be doing (be gentle with me)

I have entered all my info into the Batch Sparge and Boil Volume Calculator on JBK and it gave the following information.

So is this the procedure I need to follow?

Mashing:
1. Weigh out grist
2. Pre heat mashtun with hot water
3. Heat 11.25L of mash water too strike temprature.
4. Add mash water to mashtun & dough in grist
5. Make sure temprature is at 66/67 degrees
6. Mash for 90 mins

THIS IS WHERE I GET STUCK ! DO I TOP UP THE MASHTUN WITH THE 8.85L OF WATER STATED IN THE CALCULATOR ABOVE ? OR DO I RUN OFF THE MASH LIQUOR AFTER 90 MINS THEN DO THE 1ST BATCH SPARGE WITH THE 8.85L SUGGESTED IN THE CALCULATOR?

7. Run off the mash liquor and then top up with the 8.85L suggested in the calculator then leave for 10 mins then run off
8. Then add the 2nd batch of sparge water (15.3L) and then leave for 10 mins then run off
9. Collect a total of 30.6L in the boiler as suggested in the calculator.

Boiling:

1. Bring the 30.6L of wort to the boil adding the 55.00 gm Fuggles for the full 90 mins boil time
2. Add the 20.00 gm Bobek for the last 15 mins of the boil
3. Add 1 Protafloc Tablet for the last 15 mins of the boil
4. Add the 15.00 gm Bobek when the 90 mins boil is finished

Cooling:

1. Cool the wort using IC (after sterilising in the last 15 mins of the boil)
2. Create a whirlpool affect and leave to settle for 30 mins
3. Run off into Fermenting vessel
3. Pitch yeast when temprature is suitable

Any help & critisism greatly received

at the end of the mash crack the lid open (take a quick temp check to see if you have lost any heat over the duration on the mash ) then top up with your 8.85 l stir up leave for around ten mins, recucuate till free from particals, run off, then repeat with the second batch of 15.3 l

jobs a gudden.

DC, good luck,,, sounds as if you have got it pretty sorted,,,the gurus will be along soon but for me,,,

after the mash i ADD the 8,85 to the mash,, give it a good stir,,let it stand for 10 mins

re circulate 2 /3 ltrs till the worts clear,,

then run off the first batch,,

add the next 15.5 ltrs and repeat

I stop collecting the wort when the gravity reading is around 1006, hopefully thats around 30ltr ish, i have made the mistake in the past of collecting as much as possible only to find my orgional SG was well low then expected

Good luck. Keep your instructions handy and follow them to the letter on your brewday. Soon it will all be second nature.

I doubt you'd have missed this, as you look well on top of the details, but don't forget to have the water for your sparge heating up so that you're ready to go straight to the batch sparge once the mash is over. Best of luck! :)
