Portsmouth Water Total Alkalinity Figure

Been on to my local water authority this morning,straight through to the lab who phoned me back within 5 mins with my total alkalinity figure.

Total Alkalinity Figure expressed as 288.7ppms Hc03 Divided by 1.22 = 236.6ppms CaCo3.

This figure was expressed over a 12 month period.They were very helpful,hope this my help my fellow Pompey brewers.

NB:This reading was given after being asked which part of Portsmouth i was living in,which is PO5,but i cant see it making much difference across the city.Cloudy chalky water in PO5 looks the same as i have consumed in other areas of the city.

It's up to you chris,If you think it would be better served there, then by all means.To be honest it was only after my haste in posting that i noticed that i should have posted in that thread.I wouldn't know where to start moving a post to a different thread,will have to leave it for one of the mod's if they dont mind.

Chris just as a reference,if my TA reads 236 and i plan to treat 70L with CRS,is 78ml right. 236-30 =201x70 =14070/180 =78.Have i worked this out correctly.

What were the improvements you noticed chris,i treated my 1st brew with the GW method gypsum and magnesium sulphate,20 min boil and rack,and on checking the mash PH after 5 mins,i was in the region of 5.3.But as this has been my only brew to date,have nothing to compare it by.The beer tasted good,but a little flat,having only put 19l in a KK,think it may have become a victim to 02.

I will let you know my findings.My 1st brew was a lacking a little something,but today i met up with a fellow JBK member in pompey,he has been using a lot more hop quantities than states in GW'S book,maybe i need to tweek my hop weights.

As for gypsum and magnesium sulphate,can/should i continue to use these,but just add them to the grist as seen on the forum by other members?

Many thanks,do you add the magnesium sulphate to the boil,or in with the mash?
