An odd taste on my latest

Post by KevP » Wed Jun 03, 2009 8:47 pm

Kegged my latest extract brew the other day and its a little odd tasting (yes I know its early, I was testing how it was clearing)

Its a bog standard brew just done for speed and reliability;
2550g Light Spray Malt
225g Crystal Malt
50g Challenger 60min
12g Goldings 10min
1 Protofloc 15min

Trouble is it smells ok but on having a little taste it is ok for maybe half a second then I get a strong sort of 'cheesy' taste and it really does need spitting out.
Never had a brew go this way and wondering if its going to end up in the drain, I'll keep it for a month more but wondered if anyone has any ideas?

Maybe something to with yeast and the hot weather? I'll be bottling a batch of Old Speckled Hen clone in a day or two which has had to suffer at about 23C for the last few days and I'm wondering how well it will have coped.
Best wishes

Old hops smell cheesy, don't know if this is carried through to the finished beer though.

Oh, the Challenger I used carried a best before 04/09 but had been in the freezer since bought in November (loose bag of hops though) :(

They should be fine then. Have you used them in another brew recently?

wasn't the grated parmesan you added to the FV was it?
