co2 16g bulbs

Post by adypyk » Thu May 07, 2009 5:02 pm

HI guys, i'm contemplating going to cornys but co2's a problem, does anyone know how many 16g bulbs it take to force carbonate and dispence a corny keg?

Most likely dozens! You need to go the S30 Hambleton Bard or Widget World / Sodash system as an absolute minimum really.

I gave up trying to do cornies with a widget world as it was too expensive...

Yeah, that's why I said as an absolute minimum. CO2 bulbs are only useful for the portable keg chargers to dispense the beer at a mates house, I use one on a 9l keg which I've pre-carbonated with a pub cylinder CO2 and go through around 5 bulbs just to dispense it. Force-carbonating with them just wouldn't be viable. Unfortunately, whilst people get by with HB cylinders and whatnot the only real solution is pub gas.

Thanks for the info, i will stick to bottles for the time being.
Didn't realise it would take so many.

Well that didn't last long, filled a hb keg up since and halfway down it, i didn't think i could do it wrong but.........
I have a pin valve and the red plastic type injector that takes 8g bulbs, when i use it i can see most of the gas escaping from the plastic injector.
Could it simply be a bad batch of bulbs that doesnt fit the oring correctly?
It seems around 50/50 work ok.

Having used the 8g, 16g and s 30 cylinders i would say dont waste your time and money. These things arent cheap and by the time youve experimented with all of them, like i did, you could have got a pub gas setup. Well worth the time to source and not as expensive as you think. Over time you will save money and can control how carbonated your beer is.
Personally i would save some money for this setup and use bottles in the meantime.

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=577 might help.

If you are completely stuck with getting CO2, you can prime a corny and then top up the dispense pressure with bulbs/widget world etc.

I use S30 no worries. But I will switch to pub gas when my birthday comes around.

Has anyone tried these for co2?
http://www.hbclark.co.uk
They are on the map of co2 suppliers but it doesn't show any co2 on their web pages.
