Hi,
Another question again I'm afraid. Last time I brewed, I was frantically heating up all my sparge water in saucepan and it took forever. I used the Bruheat boiler as the mashtun but then its out of action from boiling up the sparge water. To save time, I thought about giving the saucepans a head start by using hot water from the kitchen hot tap. Is this recommended, does anyone do this?
Many thanks
Spencer
Sparge water from the hot tap
Re: Sparge water from the hot tap
I wouldn't!
I've saw dead birds and a floating crust on those hot water tanks in the loft before.
You really wanna boil your liquor, use treated bottled water or CRS, gypsum & Epsom your mains water

unless it's a sealed system without a loft tank, I wouldn't....

Re: Sparge water from the hot tap
Ive got a combi boiler and always use hot water straight from the tap to the HLT - no problems so far
Re: Sparge water from the hot tap
Combi boilers are fed direct from the mains water supply so no, you won't have issues with that.

Re: Sparge water from the hot tap
I have a combi so I should be ok in that case then. I measured the temperature coming out of the tap and it was 64. Should save quite a bit of time just having to heat it up to 80 on the cooker.

Re: Sparge water from the hot tap
I think you need to sort out a separate mash tun.
I assume you're using a grain bag in your boiler? Why not just transfer this to a suitable bucket with a tap, and insulate it with an old blanket or duvet? Your boiler is then free to heat up your sparge liquor. Better still get/make a mash tun with a false bottom or manifold - you'll find loads of ideas here. It'll make you brewday less frantic!
