protofloc

Hi guys, me again, lol. Second time using protofloc (threw the first brew away ‘because it got a tcp flavour). This time it smells OK but I’ve got a gel like substance developing in the yeast head. My wife says it looks like brown wallpaper paste. It looks ‘orrible, not nice and clean like it usually looks. Should I skim or leave it? Thanks, Ray

I always skim the dark brown stuff off the top. Often it'll get stuck to the underside of the lid of the fermenting bin, anyway.

It's a pig to get off, once it's dry. A bit like wallpaper!

Hi Ray i had this a number of times with protofloc. You can skim it but you're taking the yeast as well, other solutions are to reduce the amount used to half a teaspoon. ensure that your wort is cool enough before running off (i.e mid 20s) and giving the FV a good twist 2 or 3 times a day as this helps the head to drop. Also keep the lid on your FV as the head tends to clump after a few days exposing the beer.

Hope this helps

Andrew
