My first extract brew...irish moss/finings question.

Post by micmacmoc » Wed Jul 29, 2009 11:23 am

Following the 'all nighter' which was my first AG brew last week I wanted to keep up the momentum and prove to the wife the 'expensive' equipment wasn't poing to stand about until my next crazy idea. So I gathered together all the bits and pieces and made this;

25Lt
4.5Kg Coopers Pale Malt Extract
200g crystal (steeped for 30 mins @ 65C)
35g Goldings (1hr)
70g Root ginger (frozen then chopped) (1hr)
15g Fuggles 30 mins
10g styrians 5 mins

This all went very well but I didn't add Irish Moss. I was amazed with the clarity of the resulting liquid, its a dark amber colour and very clear. Perhaps finings will not be necessary? I do have some beer finings, should I add these to the FV now or wait until the fermenting stops, before bottling?
It measured OG 1050..its foaming away lovely this morning, my cellar varies between 18 and 23 degrees, lucky me!
I started this at 6pm and was finished by 10.30 thats six hours less than the Ag last week! Still, were I better prepared I'm sure these will drop.
Thanks for all the advice here, I would still be struggling with cheap kits if I hadn't found JBK.
Cheers!

I've never used finings or moss in my extract brews - as I recall, they are to help remove particles and cloudyness resulting from All Grain brewing.

As you, all of my extract brews have been totally crystal clear once conditioned.

I was hoping someone would say that, thanks, right, time to formulate a witbier recipe. I drank loadsa Hoegaarden style beers last night whilst brewing and thought it might be sufficiently different to have a go at. Any excuse!

Whilst not totally extract - I can 100% support the brewferm Tarwebier kit - make it up with Wheat spraymalt - makes a superb beer, very cheaply
