Burton yeast starter - no foam?

Post by mr_jolly » Sat Aug 01, 2009 9:29 am

I've made a starter (using Graham Wheeler's method) for a white labs burton ale yeast WLP023. I used medium spray malt for the starter. After 36 hours it's bubbling away furiously but there's no foam or head.

I'm just wondering if this is normal? (I thought WLP023 is supposed to be a top-fermenting yeast and if it is should I expect foam "atop" the starter or does the yeast just work on the top in an FV with real wort?).

Any thoughts would be greatley appreciated before I pitch this :D

That's great thanks :D . I have been giving it the odd gentle shake (can't believe how much it's bubbling away!). I'll be pitching it on Monday as long as the rain stops for long enough (no garage  )
