Hmm

I fear I'm going to blaspheme here.

I can't work out if I like cooper's stout or not.

I tried one by a young apprentice of mine two years ago and it tasted like fizzy water. Seriously the guy could not brew a decent pint from kit. He's since gone to chilli vodkas. Due to this I steered clear of the coopers range. That and they aren't British.

So after all this hoopla from Ditch I whacked a stout on, with 1kg MDSM, made to 20L on April 23rd. Now trying it I think there's too much of a roasted Barley flavour to it. It's charring and burnt with a slightly smokey nose. I just can't work out whether that's good or not!

I think I'll try their Dark Ale but for Stouts Munton's Conn. Imperial Stout beats Coopers for me.
I agree with you mate but coopers dark ale is really nice

The one thing that worries me is what if my brew didn't do it justice.

Seeing as both brews I had have been so different from the same kit.
Drinking: Turbo Cider, Black Rain Stout, Jotun Killer Double Stout, Apple Wine, AG#1 F.A.G,
Fermenting: Bramble Wine
Conditioning: Blueberry Jam Mead, Gales Mead, HLM EPIC FORCE Methegln, Tropical Juice TC on an orange mead slurry, AG#2 S.L.A.G.
Waiting for Space: Muntons Conn: Bock

Brewed up a batch of Ditchs stout last friday. (Coopers stout can with 1kg of Medium Spray Malt)
Brewed it to 20L in an attempt to avoid the explosion!!! It still exploded out of the FV!!
OG as 1.045. Its currently at 1.013.
What final gravity do people normally get?

Hi slayerking
Mine went down to 1012. so I think you are nearly there. You'll be able to start drinking it about 2 days then.

Cool, so Im nearly ready. Might leave it til Friday and if its not budged from 1.013 I'll bottle.

Drinkable in 2 days, thats fast!! I was gona leave it at least a week in bottles before I try it. Nice!! :)
Had a sneaky taste from the FV when I was taking a gravity sample, tastes nice.... warm, flat and still a little young, but could get a hint of roastyness at the back of it!! :) Yummy!!

Bottled my ditch's stout there this evening. Bottles at 1.012. Been at that for the last 3 days.
I'm surprised at how nice it tastes straight out of the fermenter. Chocolate, roasty goodness. Yummy.
Hopefully I didnt introduce any nasties during the bottling process.
Prob try a bottle in a week. :D

A month later and it tastes much better. Not too flavourful but more so than Guinness.

hi im on my 4th batch of the infamous Ditchs stout, but this time have done with a kilo of dark dme.

i started the brew on sat evening took a hydrometer test and was at 1.040 yesterday (tues) it showed 1.010 and today (wed) is the same so will give me a abv of around 4% does this sound about right. there seems to be no more activity in the fermenter but i am worried because it means it only took 3 full days???

my other batches i took no readings just waited 7 days.

any help obvously appriciated

It sounds okay to me. I made one up a couple of months ago, it finished at 1.013 from an OG of 1.045, so that's about the same - 4%.

Very nice it is too - I've got about six bottles left. :(

Here lads, it's a coopers kit made up with Malt as the fermentable and made short, don't feel like you're causing affront to the man. Ditch's stout is more a term of affection than a brand name :)

Ditch, my lot are all living in Elphin these days, so not a million miles from yourself I suspect, you may even know my brother who fishes and does Ghille in the Carrick-Elphin-Hillstreet area.

i dont get what your getting at, im not refering to"ditchs stout" as anything less than a term of affection, since doing my first brew of this i have made small changes just to see what difference it made. making short is simply to stop the foam going everywhere in my kitchen.

also since doing the first batch of this i am really not that interested in brewing anything else as i have found a brew that matches what i was looking for in homebrew, i admit i am still farly new to brewing, but it would seem wrong to refer to the mix of coopers stout and malt to anything other than Ditchs purly as a thanks to the man for the great drink. NOT AS A BRAND NAME.

To be honest, mate, I don't even know where Elphin is. But, that's hardly surprising, because I don't know where anywhere else is either!

Honestly. Blindfold me and drive me a mile from this cottage? I'd probably never find my way back again!

It's a small backwater near Carrick on shannon, whereabouts in Leitrim are you yourself?
