Looking to buy a 10 gallon system. Hop & Grape?
Re: Looking to buy a 10 gallon system. Hop & Grape?
Some very good advice there. I didn't mention the orange tap as it's perfectly serviceable to begin with but you'll soon realise its weakness. Firstly, the plastic washer spilt mid-brew on me resulting in hot wort dripping on the floor, not good. The biggest problem is that opening the tap can easily result in you unscrewing the tap from the hop strainer and again result in wort trickling onto the floor. In practice this is easily avoided by holding the body whilst you open the tap but it's an additional thing to beware of. I changed mine to a ball-valve and fibre washer for these very reasons.

The orange tap is actually an improvement over the tap i got with the H&G boiler, it was a heat rated drum tap, packed in after just a few brews, leaked like a geriatrics nose and the internal drum portion split allowing the harbouring of of lots of nasties (i attribute at least one infection to it).
The price they charge for the orange tap £10 you'd think they'd just supply a lever ball tap which would be cheaper and better to boot.

There are lots of remarks about batch sparging limitations with regards to mash tun size. when I started i never knew about batch sparging and so I've always fly sparged. I did try batch sparging once and it worked fine but fly sparging is just as easy and I get better efficiency.

Thank you all for your advice, it is greatly appreciated. Looks like Hop & Grape, and maybe a bit of DIY (the latter an unknown quantity !)
cheers

No problems. The H&G system and the aforementioned modifications are pretty common - plenty of information about on here.moonbox wrote:Thank you all for your advice, it is greatly appreciated. Looks like Hop & Grape, and maybe a bit of DIY (the latter an unknown quantity !)
