200L Brewery (The new, NEW plan)
200L Brewery (The new, NEW plan)
I`m currently contemplating uping my brewery to 200L for as little as possible,
I`ve so far found these vessels from Brupak Clicky
Together with this burner the 13.5kWClicky
And i`m thinking of using a few of these 220L plastick barrels from here Clicky
I`m also after about 5 Stainless steel firkins but my googling as returned zilch, so if anyone knows anywhere that i could obtain these
from would be great.
I`d also like any thoughts on the equipment i`ve earmarked above.
Cheers

Re: 200L Brewery
Check with Clive that you can use those vessels with a propane burner, I think not.
Re: 200L Brewery
yes thats the link for the firkins but they are £75 each plus Vat and postage
heres the reply I got from origal inquiry
Thank you for your message. The price per keg would be seventy five pounds excluding VAT. At the moment they are currently branded with another brewer's stamp, would you want them to be rebranded or just have the current markings removed? The kegs would be available in a couple of weeks. In terms of delivery, they are located within the UK so would be best to collect from their location though we may be able to assist with their delivery as part of their movement of our trucks but this may take two to three weeks.
Kind regards,
Russell Pritchard

Re: 200L Brewery
Thats the way to do it, start small!
I got a reply to an email from David Porter (Copy paste below) with some sizes so I could work out if I could cram a brewery in my new Garage... Plans on the back burner now that I've got a job.

Hi,
I've had a pretty good read through your website and found it very informative.
Having recently been made redundant I'm researching other avenues, and also have a house extension build in progress with a fairly large garage (5x3m approx) with a rather high ceiling.
I have a few questions:
Could you give me some overall dimensions for the 2.5 barrel and 4 barrel breweries please?
Size Specification for 2.5 barrel plant
All in mm - vessel diameter x vessel height, installed width x installed height, - capacity litres.
Hot Liquor Tank 794x1250 1034x1590 - 600ltr
MT 794x625 894x925 - 310ltr 80kg of malt or 300 litres at 5% alcohol
FVs 780x1150 880x1170 - 500ltr These will be need to be set on some form of ‘plinth’ probably about 450mm high.
Copper 794x1020 894x1320 - 460ltr boil volume with space of 150mm from lid.
The ideal space will be where the brewhouse -HLT-Mash tun- & Copper are
in a line against a wall with about 600mm between each vessel.
The main locating point for the brewhouse is the possible outlet for the chimney from the copper.
The fermenting room will need about 100mm between each FV and some operating space in front of the FVs and at least 1m above
The fermenting vessels are manufactured in polyethylene and will need to be off the ground by at least 400mm. the vessels will hang over the edge a little so any plinth needs to be allowing about 900 sq, and slightly sloping forwards.
Size Specification for 4.0 barrel plant
All in mm - vessel diameter x vessel height - installed width x installed height, - capacity litres.
Hot Liquor Tank 950x1500 - 1190x1840 - 1000ltr
MT 794x1000 900x1300 - 495ltr 125kg of malt or 650 litres at 5% alcohol
FVs 825x1400 880x1700 - 750ltr
Copper 1000x1000 1105x1350 - 650ltr boil volume with space of 150mm from lid.
The ideal space will be where the brewhouse -HLT-Mash tun- & Copper are
in a line against a wall with about 600mm between each vessel.
The fermenting room will need about 100mm between each FV and some operating space in front of the FVs and at least 1m above

Re: 200L Brewery
Hi
saw your post. I have a 150 litre set up, that after evap and stuff gets me about 110litres a brew.
I currently use a very large 150 litre stock pot with a 14KW calor burner. This heats 150 litres of water from cold in about 1.5 to 2 hours. I tried using the large 220 litre plastic bins, for fermentation, but found that it was very difficult to clean and had 3 brews ruined, i think because the plastic absorbed baddies, even though I used bleach to clean. I went back to using 3x 60 litre instead and have never had a problem since. However, I am still looking for a solution to fill 150 litres of brew in one vessel, as I have the heaters, which by the way I bought from hong kong via ebay, these being 200 watt fish tank, stainless steel heaters, their great! I have been looking to go up, but then i found that i needed a bigger lpg burner, some serious kit was required, and came to the conclusion that the next step be something like 500litres of stainless steel would be required as a boiler. I also, somehow, want an extra boiler that I could heat to 85 degrees overnight, so that you could start early in the morning for the mash ! This I still can't find a "do it yourself" solution. For 500 litres of brew I guess you would need about 200 litres of water for the mash, ish ! I tried converting a 220 litre vessel with heating elements, but this means you need a "stirrer" cus the water is warm at the top and cold at the bottom, back to the drawing board !
Finally, I know a farmer that spent 120,000 quid starting a brewery. He forgot one thing, he did not have any customers ! He sold the brewery equipment 12months later for 10,000 quid !

They're not firkins, they're 11 gallon kegs.
Herefordshire Casks do firkins, with branding of your choice for 65 quid + VAT.

Not wishing to put a damper on anyones plans, but bear in mind that if you set up a brewery on an almost small commercial scale in your garage / shed / house you may well fall into the trap of requiring planning permission. So it is best to check first. Link here that explains it http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/englan ... ngfromhomeand if you do need professional advice contact the MRTPI for accredited consultants http://www.rtpiconsultants.com/index.php Subsonic
Re: 200L Brewery
Thanks for all the replies.
Yes my idea is to start small and selling it to local pubs, the 200ltr setup seemed not to expesive an option
and i just about have the room to do it at home, any bigger and i would need a unit, plus 200ltrs is still
a part time affair so wouldn`t matter too much at first about generating a lot of income, as i could work
on that as i go along.
I may just have to go back to the drawing board as regards the equipment.

Re: 200L Brewery
get yer welding mask on!!!

Re: 200L Brewery
The problem is you can buy the vessels cheaper than they would cost to make, as i would need all the sheetpdtnc wrote:get yer welding mask on!!!
cut rolled and then i`d have a lot of welding to do, and i bet the bugger would warp to hell, plus at the moment
i`m not working at a place that works with stainless, my last job would have been perfect, for sourcing the offcuts
and tubing etc, the real pisser is i`m currently working up at Leeming Bar on the worlds most upto date pop manufacturing
plant, and the equipment that they are installing is just unbelievable, £5m worth, now if i could you sneak home with a few
of the tanks that have just arrived on site, problem is they are 14m tall
